Code within the Da Vince Code trailer?

Just watched the Da Vince Code trailer - looks like it's gonna be a good movie! Anyway, noticed something weird about the trailer --> near the end where the credits for the actors were shown they had some alphabets intentionally 'bolded' & 'goldened' (got such word?...=P). The letters are:

Thinking that the trailer might contain clues to a 'secret', I tried to decipher the code by rearranging the letters around & this the only configuration i can figure out:

Super stressful week for me this time: 1. One assessment centre today which ended quite weird (will expand when I have more time) 2. A case interview tomorrow with my dream firm. 3. CFD program due on Monday + writeup! 4. another CFD project - tougher one coming up! 5. and also another Wing Design project...sighz... But some surprises this week too: 1. My BE* experience!

Hi guys, Back from a long hiatus and it seems that lots have been happening recently - minishorts dissing centerpide, the Xiaxue vs Malaysian bloggers TOILET fiasco, news of Malaysians making love in TOILETS and loving it, the Dawn Yang admiration...did I miss anything else? Anyway, the reason I was MIA's b'cos of my internet connection! I signed up about 1.5 months ago for the BE* 24Mbps ADSL2+ pilot programme and only just got it like 1.5 weeks ago. Was really excited when I first got the modem/router (which was provided free) but once I plugged my phone line to the modem/router, I was terribly disappointed with speeds of only about 1.7-1.9Mbps! But it felt significantly faster than my old 1Mbps connection. So upon finding out more about ADSL2+, I found that the speed depends on how far you are from the telephone exchange, where they have all the equipment! Basically, this graph stolen from yesyes who then stole from Internode shows that there's a drastic drop in speed once you're more than 2km away from the exchange!

So, using this service from samknows, I was able to find the straight line distance from the local exchange to my home and it turned out to be 2.23km! So shouldn't the speed be around 15Mbps? Anyway, common sense tells you that phone lines are never laid straight to each house but goes thru' twists and turns b4 finally reaching one's house. So, how do I check out how far am I from the exchange in terms of phone line distance? Luckily, this guy from yesyes somehow managed to come out with this graph which shows the line attenuation (a stat which can be found in the modem provided/if you have some equipment to measure it but some liken it to 'noise' in the lines) and can roughly tell you how far you are from the exchange: As one of the unlucky ones, my line turns out to have an attenuation of about 52dB and as you can see my max speed in theory could be about 5.5Mbps. But in reality, London copper wires are so old and they differ in quality so much, you would be lucky to get 3/4 of that speed! So like any Malaysian would do, I complained and in less than 2 hours I got a reply saying that they'll look into it and that was on Saturday! Another 4-5 hours later, I got another email from their customer service guy telling me to switch on my modem and leave it on (at about 1 or 2am in the morning). And on Sunday, I suddenly saw the modem rebooting by itself and voila - it's 2.6Mbps (not quite the 24Mbps advertised but I'm pretty contented now after not having internet access for more than a month)! Download speeds without download accelerators are about 170-260kBps using Opera, bittorrent reached a max of 220kBps using utorrent and so hopefully my speed will go up some more.

Drawing conclusions from a forum where there's lotsa ppl with BE* connections comparing connections, it seems that speeds range from 2-22Mbps! So, if you are less than 1km away from the exchange, it's really a good deal to get this since it's only £20/month with a free modem/router (Speedtouch 716WL) that comes with built-in wireless-g capability and also 4 Ethernet/LAN ports and best thing is there's no contract involved (except that you have to notify them 3 months before you decide to call it quits) - perfect for students!

So, in summary:

Pros:

Pretty good customer service (they even work on weekends!),
friendly management who even visits forums and updates customers on the progress of the pilot programme
decent speed for the price (£24) even when you're as far away from the exchange as me.
free modem/router (saves you about £99)
no contract
'unlimited' downloads (though they say somewhere in the TOS that if you exceed 500GB, they might have to do something about it)
1 month free line rental if you sign up through me

Cons:

Speed greatly differs depending on how far away you're from the local exchange so check the graphs and websites b4 making a decision!
It's a pilot programme, so there's no guarantees on reliability (although it seems to be improving)

But I have to say I'm quite impressed with the concept of it i.e. a super-exclusive social networking website which requires a superpremium member to invite you (apparently if you wanna bypass this, you need at least 100 invites from normal members) and you need to be somebody...and I really mean somebody. Examples of the high-profile members include Paris Hilton, Quentin Tarantino, Ivanka Trump (Donald Trump's daughter) and Tiger Woods. Come to think of it, I think Friendster, MySpace, etc...just doesn't cut it anymore as a social networking site with so many members trying to link to as many ppl as possible and you sometimes get ppl who don't know you linking you 'cos you're pretty/handsome, etc. Maybe it's time for me to launch another Snobster soon - any takers? I don't normally post spam/forward them around but this one sounds quite serious when my department lecturer started forwarding it to the General Office with a concerned note asking the secretary to forward it to students:

The CDC also reports that needles have been found in the coin return areas of pay phones and coke machines. Everyone is asked to use extreme caution when confronted with these types of situations. All public chairs should be thoroughly but safely inspected prior to any use. A thorough visual inspection is considered the bare minimum. Further more, they ask that everyone notify their family members and friends of the potential dangers, as well. The previous information was sent from hanley police station to all of the local councils in the Staffs area and was interdepartmentally dispersed.

HELP! Need advice with obsolete computer!

Hi guys, I have a very old computer which I just took out from the store and here are the specs: Pentium III 650 MHz 96MB RAM 8GB HDD 16MB ATI Rage 128 GL Hercules Fortissimo II Gamesurround Soundcard Originally, I intended to turn it into a Tivo-like media centre using Ubuntu & MythTV + a TV Tuner card, but I think my specs might not make it. So now I'm thinking of turning it into a webserver =) Anybody has any experience in this? Any ideas on which Linux distro I should use for such a low-spec machine?

Hi guys, Sorry for the long absence, my internet connection is still not installed yet! (yeah, it's already been 3 weeks but it's gonna be 24Mbps, so I hope it's worth the wait!) Anyway, let's get back to the topic: Inspired by the Million Dollar Homepage, I present to you the 60,000 pixel floating banner on your left! What this banner does is to display a 10x10 (pixels = 100 pixels square block) logo/image on any part of the 10x60 grid. It's a blog aggregator for the public and currently it consist of blogs from Malaysia and some from Singapore. What does it do/How SARA works? Basically, it collects excerpts of your most recent posts and send them to our servers and we'll show them on our main webpage, whereby readers can just click on the title of your post if they are interested and they can read excerpts of it. If they are interested to read more, they just have to click on the blog's name and they'll be transported to your blog. How much does it cost? It's totally FREE! How do I submit my blog feed?

Borrowing stuff online?

Ever wished for a website like Ebay where you can borrow things for free? This coming 15th of September, there'll be one and it's called Borrowme.com. So, how does this work? In order to create a web of trust, you have to lend something first to gain a credit point and you can use this credit to borrow something in return. What if somebody breaks my stuff while borrowing it? Well, like Ebay there's a rating system. So, if you're the type that breaks other ppl's stuff while you are borrowing it, expect a bad rating and nobody will lend stuff to you anymore. It's an experimental idea but if it works out it's gonna be great 'cos you don't always have to buy DVDs anymore and can just borrow them off somebody who's done with it. Or you can borrow stuff that you don't always use e.g. wheelbarrows, cangkuk, hammer, screwdriver, etc so you'll never have to buy again...lol =) Anyway, if you wanna have a look at how the system will look like on the 15th of September see the pictures that follow:

This is useful for international students who uses calling cards to call back home to Malaysia and also for local Malaysians who use international calling cards like iTalk: Do you find it a trouble to remember the long PIN numbers? No worries now. You can actually save the PIN in your phone with these easy steps:

Type the access number. (e.g. 02071241210)
Press and hold # until a word 'w' appears
Now type the PIN number.
Once again press and hold # until another 'w' appears
Type in your home phone number.
Save as a contact which you can easily call later or even save it as a speedial.

*Note that when you call the number, you'll get a dialog box asking if you want to send ringtones. Choose YES and your phone will send your PIN. After this, you'll once again have the same dialog box with your home phone number. Once again choose YES and you'll hear the recorded message of "XXX minutes left". Tested only on Motorolas. Tell me if it works on Nokias/Samsungs/etc...
